History
With the exception of the CD case, I got the rest of the items new years ago. I dug up some batteries and am listening to the player and headphones right now to verify they work. They work great (note to self: remove batteries before shipping). It's actually been a while since I've listened to anything since MP3s. Nice not having the background hiss that I get from listening through my computer. Anyway... I can't remember the exact occassion that brought the Discman into my life. Could have been a Birthday or Christmas present - either way, it was new and I was cool. I haven't used it in a long time. For the past several years, it sat on a shelf, and using tape adapter, hooked into my boombox from the early 80's that only played tapes. And, get this, the boombox only had a Phono input with no RCA inputs. So, I had to by the tape adapter to play the CDs through my old boombox - I never used it in my car. The headphones I got sometime between the boombox and the Discman. I actually used them with my first Walkman. I spent $30-40 on them sometime between 1985-1987 and they have been in constant use until last year (see Known Issues below). Of course, the Mini-To-RCA cord is not an original accessory and I just dug it out of my bag of cables to throw into the auction. I got the CD case from a sister-in-law several years ago. I don't carry CDs around with me anymore, so I have no need for a case.
Known Issues
You will want to be know the following:
- Since the Discman was manufactured in 1992 it does not play MP3s! I won't speculate on CD-R, CD-RW, etc. However, it is working fine with my Queen Greatest Hits from 1992!
- No manuals or instruction books
- Obviously there is a little wear on everything, but nothing out of the ordinary from 10+ years of jammin'!
- At one point, the little ball-bearing unit that the CDs pop onto came off. I put everything back together and superglued it together. No problems since!
- The headphones need new ear cushions. The other ones disintegrated. You can get new ones at any decent electronics store for $2-3.
- The connector jack on the headphones is a little touchy. You have to position it just so to get sound through both ears. Then you don't want to move the cord too much. I actually just replaced the headphones last year (after 15+ years) with a pair of Sennheisers because of the connector. Otherwise they are great.
- I haven't used the car tape connector in years. Nor can I try it out at the moment.
